Sonja Klein, Klaus Nigsch, and René Röpke participated in the pre-conference “Education in Times of AI – School Between Technology and Digital Humanism” on June 23rd, 2026 in Vienna, held ahead of the Digital Humanism Conference 2026.
The event brought together educators, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in education. Highlights included a keynote by Martina Landman (University of Cambridge and former LTeD team member) and panel discussions featuring experts such as Leon Frischauf (Studyly), Corinna Hörmann (Universität Salzburg), and Stefan Woltran, Julia Neidhardt, and Hannes Werthner (TU Wien Informatics).
As part of the panel “AI as a Subject of Learning”, René Röpke discussed questions of AI literacy and AI education with Miriam Zotter (BG Purkersdorf), Seval Yildiz-Sezer and Vojtech Maxa (GRG1 Stubenbastei), Nicole Kraler (Die Wiener Volkshochschulen), and Bernhard Fetz (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek). The panel was moderated by Doris Vickers (Die Wiener Volkshochschulen GmbH) and Hannes Werthner (TU Wien Informatics).
The event was organized by Anita Eichinger, Horst Eichinger, and Hannes Werthner, with support from Die Wiener Volkshochschulen, Wiener Lernhilfe, Wienbibliothek im Rathaus, GRG1 Stubenbastei, TU Wien Informatics, and the Digital Humanism Initiative.
The discussions provided valuable perspectives on how educational institutions can balance technological innovation with human-centered approaches to teaching and learning and offered important insights for LTed Research Lab’s ongoing research on AI and digital transformation in education.
